A második világháborút követően Kárpátalja a Szovjetunióhoz tartozott. Az egyházellenes szovjethatalom a kárpátaljai görögkatolikus felekezet felszámolására törekedett. A munkácsi püspök, Romzsa Tódor nem volt hajlandó feladni görögkatolikus hitét és megszegni a pápának tett esküjét. Ezért 1947-ben Sztálin engedélyével brutálisan meggyilkolták. “Krisztusért meghalni olyan, mint örökké élni.” 2001-ben II. János Pál pápa boldoggá avatta. A film megtörtént eseményeken alapul.
